Michel Eyquem de Montaigne [mi'ʃɛl e'kɛm də mɔ̃'tɛɲ] (älter: [mɔ̃taɲ]) (lateinisch Michael Montanus; * 28. Februar 1533 auf Schloss Montaigne im Périgord; † 13. September 1592 ebenda) war Jurist, Skeptiker und Philosoph, Humanist und Begründer der Essayistik. Als dem katholischen Glauben verbundener Politiker hatte er Zugang zu den einflussreichen Persönlichkeiten der französischen Monarchie am Ende der Renaissance sowie der beginnenden Gegenreformation.
