Mengistu Haile Mariam (amharisch መንግስቱ ኃይለ ማርያም; * 21. Mai 1937 in Addis Abeba) war von 1974 bis 1991 de facto der Machthaber, seit 11. Februar 1977 auch das Staatsoberhaupt Äthiopiens. Sein von der Sowjetunion gestütztes diktatorisches Regime verfolgte das Ziel, Äthiopien als sozialistischen Staat zu etablieren. Nach seiner Flucht aus Äthiopien erhielt Mengistu Asyl in Simbabwe, wo er bis heute lebt.
