Wassily Kandinsky (russisch Василий Васильевич Кандинский, Wassili Wassiljewitsch Kandinski, wiss. Transliteration Vasilij Vasil'evič Kandinskij; * 4. Dezemberjul. / 16. Dezember 1866greg. in Moskau, Russisches Kaiserreich; † 13. Dezember 1944 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, Frankreich) war ein russischer Maler, Grafiker und Kunsttheoretiker, der auch in Deutschland und Frankreich lebte und wirkte. Mit Franz Marc war er Begründer der Redaktionsgemeinschaft Der Blaue Reiter, die am 18. Dezember 1911 ihre erste Ausstellung in München eröffnete. Der Blaue Reiter ging aus der 1909 gegründeten Neuen Künstlervereinigung München (N.K.V.M.) hervor, in der Kandinsky zeitweise Vorsitzender war. In der Weimarer Republik war er als Lehrer am Bauhaus tätig. Kandinsky war ein Künstler des Expressionismus und einer der Wegbereiter der abstrakten Kunst. Er hat sich als Schöpfer des ersten abstrakten Bildes der Welt bezeichnet, das aber möglicherweise mit der Angabe des Jahres 1910 statt 1913 vordatiert ist. Die neuere Forschung verweist darauf, dass im November 1906 die Malerin Hilma af Klint die erste Serie kleinformatiger abstrakter Bilder gemalt hat. Das großformatige Gemälde Die zehn Größten, Nr. 2, Kindheit, Gruppe I folgte 1907.
