Er war maßgeblich an der Entwicklung des modernen Mangas und Animes der Nachkriegszeit beteiligt. In seinem umfassenden Werk schuf er zahlreiche technische wie erzählerische Innovationen, was ihm Spitznamen wie „Vater des Manga“ (マンガの父 Manga no Chichi) oder „Gott des Manga“ (マンガの神様 Manga no Kami-sama) einbrachten. Zu seinen berühmtesten Arbeiten zählen beispielsweise Astro Boy, Black Jack, Prinzessin Saphir und Kimba, der weiße Löwe.
