Karl Wilhelm Otto Lilienthal (* 23. Mai 1848 in Anklam, Provinz Pommern, Königreich Preußen; † 10. August 1896 in Berlin, Deutsches Kaiserreich) war ein deutscher Luftfahrtpionier. Er gilt als der erste Mensch, der erfolgreich und wiederholbar Flüge mit einem Gleitflugzeug, damals Flugapparat genannt, durchführte und dem Flugprinzip „schwerer als Luft“ damit zur ersten menschlichen Anwendung verhalf und so den Weg zu dessen späterem Erfolg bahnte. Seine experimentellen Vorarbeiten und erste Flugversuche ab 1891 führten zum Konzept der Tragfläche. Die Darstellung aerodynamischer Eigenschaften von Flügeln im Polardiagramm wurde von ihm entwickelt und wird bis heute eingesetzt. Die Produktion des Normalsegelapparates in seiner Maschinenfabrik in Berlin war die erste Serienfertigung eines Flugzeugs. Sein Flugprinzip war die Umsetzung von kinetischer Energie und auch potentieller Energie in Auftrieb und Vortrieb (Gleitflug).
