Sie war Karmelitin sowie Mystikerin und gilt als „berühmteste Nonne des frühneuzeitlichen Katholizismus“. In der katholischen Kirche wird sie als Heilige und Kirchenlehrerin verehrt. Oft wird sie die „große Teresa“ genannt, um sie von der heiligen Theresia vom Kinde Jesus (von Lisieux) zu unterscheiden.
