Außerdem gilt Lucas mit Unternehmen wie dem Tricktechnikstudio Industrial Light & Magic seiner ehemaligen Unternehmensgruppe Lucasfilm als Pionier beim Einsatz digitaler Kinokameras und des Qualitätsstandards THX als sehr engagierter Geschäftsmann in der Filmindustrie. Im Jahr 2009 rangierte Lucas auf der Liste der reichsten Leute der Welt des Forbes Magazine mit einem geschätzten Vermögen von drei Milliarden US-Dollar auf Platz 205. Allein seine Star-Wars-Saga (Episode 1-6, inklusive der Wiederveröffentlichung von Episode 4-6 im Jahr 1997) spielte weltweit über 4,4 Milliarden US-Dollar ein (Stand: Januar 2010). 2005 schätzte das Forbes Magazine die durch Star-Wars-Merchandising über 28 Jahre erwirtschafteten Einnahmen und ermittelte eine Gesamtsumme von beinahe 20 Milliarden US-Dollar. Damit ist Star Wars finanziell gesehen das bislang erfolgreichste Filmprojekt. Im Oktober 2012 wurde bekannt, dass Lucas seine Firmengruppe Lucasfilm für über vier Milliarden US-Dollar an die Walt Disney Company verkauft hat, wobei er den größten Teil des Erlöses Bildungszwecken spenden will.
