Jair Messias Bolsonaro [ʒaˈiʁ bowsoˈnaɾu] (* 21. März 1955 in Glicério, Bundesstaat São Paulo) ist ein brasilianischer Politiker, der vom 1. Januar 2019 bis zum 1. Januar 2023 Präsident Brasiliens war. Der ehemalige Fallschirmjäger-Hauptmann vertrat von 1990 bis 2018 einen Wahlkreis des Bundesstaats Rio de Janeiro in der Abgeordnetenkammer des brasilianischen Kongresses. Er gehörte neun Parteien an; seit Ende 2021 ist er Mitglied der Partido Liberal. Bolsonaro vertritt gesellschaftspolitisch rechtspopulistische bis rechtsextreme und wirtschaftspolitisch neoliberale Positionen. Aufmerksamkeit erlangte er vor allem mit frauenfeindlichen, homophoben, rassistischen und antiwissenschaftlichen Äußerungen sowie seiner Verteidigung der brasilianischen Militärdiktatur (1964-1985). Ein Großteil seines Erfolgs basiert auf der Unterstützung von Predigern und Anhängern des Evangelikalismus, zu dem sich Bolsonaro seit seiner Taufe im Jordan im Jahr 2016 bekennt. Bei der Wahl im Jahr 2022 unterlag er knapp seinem Herausforderer Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Wegen eines versuchten Staatsstreichs verurteilte das Oberste Gericht Brasiliens Bolsonaro im September 2025 zu einer Haftstrafe von mehr als 27 Jahren.
