März 1909 bis zum 4. März 1913 als 27. Präsident der Vereinigten Staaten; später erreichte er sein eigentliches Ziel und war von 1921 bis 1930 Oberster Bundesrichter. Bis heute ist er der Einzige, der diese beiden Ämter innehatte.
